City Courtyard

Brighton

Project background

In city homes where outdoor space is often limited, a courtyard can easily become a place that is viewed more than it is used. This project set out to change that, transforming a compact urban garden into a luxurious retreat that could be enjoyed long after sunset.

The client wanted more than practical exterior lighting. They wanted a space that could feel calm and intimate on a quiet evening, become more vibrant when entertaining, and remain closely connected to the character of the home.

With its Moroccan-inspired detailing, decorative screens, textured surfaces, planting and water feature, the garden already possessed a strong identity. The role of the lighting was to reveal these elements at night, enhancing the character of the space without overwhelming it.

Rather than illuminating everything equally, the design focused attention where it mattered most. Planting, architectural details, patterned screens, textured tiles and the main focal point were all carefully highlighted, using layers of light to create contrast, dimension and visual interest.

The result is a space that changes dramatically once daylight fades. Instead of disappearing into darkness, it takes on an entirely different character.

Creating Atmosphere Through Control

A Rako lighting control system was specified to provide complete flexibility while keeping operation simple. Rather than relying on multiple switches, the client can adjust the entire garden with a single touch.

Several lighting scenes were created to suit different moments throughout the evening, from low-level, relaxed settings to brighter scenes for entertaining. This allows the space to transition to how it is being used while keeping the technology simple and intuitive.

For the client, the experience is effortless. There is no need to think in terms of individual circuits, zones or switching. Instead, they simply choose how they want the space to feel and select that scene. This was particularly important in a compact courtyard, where every detail influences the overall experience.

A single fitting set too brightly can dominate the garden, while a balanced scene can transform the entire environment.

Pattern, Shadow and Texture

One of the defining qualities of the garden is its use of pattern. Decorative screens, tiled surfaces and architectural detailing contribute to its Moroccan-inspired character, creating a sense of privacy, enclosure and escape.

At night, these details become part of the experience. Light washes textured walls, catches perforated screens and produces shifting shadows that add rhythm and visual richness. The result is not simply illumination, but a layered and immersive environment.

Warm colour temperatures were used to complement the earthy palette, from the terracotta walls and textured tiles to the natural materials and planting. Against the evening sky, this warmth creates a soft and welcoming glow that makes the garden feel sheltered and inviting.

The scheme deliberately avoids over-lighting. Certain areas are allowed to recede into shadow while important features are selectively illuminated. This restraint adds dimension and prevents the space from feeling flat or overly bright.

An Outdoor Room

Although modest in size, the courtyard was designed to feel like an outdoor room. The seating area, patterned floor tiles, warm wall finishes and enclosed layout create an environment that feels intimate and cocooning rather than exposed.

Lighting reinforces this sense of enclosure, bringing the comfort typically associated with interior spaces into the garden and helping it feel like a natural extension of the home.

Through scene-based control, the client can move easily between different settings. Softer scenes create a quiet retreat for evenings outdoors, while brighter arrangements make the space welcoming for guests.

A Feature Wall Brought to Life

The focal point of the project is the Moroccan tiled feature wall with its integrated water fountain. During the day it adds colour, texture and personality, but after sunset it becomes the visual centrepiece of the garden.

A bespoke lighting arrangement was developed around this feature, with each fitting positioned to accentuate the texture, colour and craftsmanship of the tiles. Carefully directed uplighting reveals details that are not fully appreciated in daylight.

The water feature introduces another sensory element. Subtle illumination enhances the reflective qualities of the green tiles, while the movement of water brings a gentle sense of life to the space. Light, texture and reflection work together to create a calm and engaging focal point.

The fountain was also incorporated into the lighting scenes, allowing water and illumination to operate as a single design element. Whether the space is used for entertaining, relaxation or a quiet late evening outdoors, the feature wall remains at the heart of the experience.

This demonstrates how thoughtful lighting can do far more than make a garden visible. It can reveal architecture, enrich materials and reshape the emotional quality of a space.

Planting After Dark

Planting plays an important role in the garden’s evening character. Uplighting to the trees and specimen plants introduces height and structure, drawing the eye through the space and softening the surrounding architecture.

The olive tree, palms and low-level planting become almost sculptural at night. Their forms, textures and shadows introduce movement and visual interest, helping the garden feel layered despite its compact footprint.

This balance between planting, architecture and light creates a strong sense of cohesion. Every element has a purpose, yet nothing feels overworked.

A Luxurious Outdoor Experience

The finished garden demonstrates the impact that intelligent lighting can have on smaller exterior spaces. Through careful layering and intuitive control, the courtyard has become a far more versatile and enjoyable part of the home.

What was once a compact outdoor area is now an elegant evening retreat with a strong focal point, visual depth and lighting that adapts effortlessly to different occasions. The result is luxurious yet understated, technically sophisticated yet remarkably easy to use.

Luxury technology should never feel complicated. In this project, it works quietly in the background, allowing the client to focus entirely on the experience of the space.

For the homeowners, the transformation exceeded expectations. Reflecting on the project, they described the process as both creative and collaborative:

"Working with Todd on our garden lighting project was a fantastic experience. From the first conversation and design renders, it was clear Todd understood exactly how to bring our outdoor space to life. Every stage was handled with professionalism, creativity and genuine care. The final lighting design has transformed our garden and exceeded our expectations. We couldn’t be happier and highly recommend Todd Roberts Lighting."

Their experience reflects the wider ambition of the project: to create a lighting scheme that enhances not only the appearance of the garden, but the way it is enjoyed and experienced every evening.
