Museo del Galeón
Philippines
Project background
Museo del Galeón is an immersive cultural and educational destination in the Philippines, exploring the country’s rich maritime heritage and its role in centuries of global trade and cultural exchange.
At the heart of the museum is the Galeón Espíritu Santo, a full scale representation of a 17th century galleon originally constructed in Cavite in 1603. Through a combination of artefacts, exhibits, architectural features and multimedia experiences, the museum takes visitors on a journey through the Philippines’ seafaring history and the Manila Acapulco galleon trade.
Bringing that story to life required more than simply illuminating the museum’s exhibits. Lighting needed to reveal important details, establish visual hierarchy and complement the architecture, while helping to create an atmosphere that supports the visitor experience.
KNOX Corporation supplied the project’s high specification architectural lighting fixtures and dimming solution, selecting Rako lighting controls to provide the flexibility, scalability and precise control required across the museum.
Creating the right environment
Lighting within a museum has to perform several roles simultaneously.
Artefacts and exhibits need to be presented clearly, architectural features revealed and visual focus carefully considered, all while ensuring the technology itself does not become a distraction.
For Museo del Galeón, the lighting specification focused on precision optics, controlled beam distribution, high colour rendering, glare control and dependable performance.
With different areas incorporating exhibits, architectural features and multimedia content, each space required its own approach to illumination.
Rather than applying a uniform lighting level throughout the museum, the lighting needed to be carefully balanced to establish focus and contrast without overwhelming the exhibits.
This made the control system an important part of the overall specification.
Rako was selected to provide the dimming and lighting control solution, allowing the different circuits and control zones to be coordinated and individual lighting environments to be adjusted to suit the requirements of each space.
Bringing the maritime theme to life
Alongside the more controlled architectural and exhibition lighting, the scheme incorporates several dynamic elements that add another dimension to the museum experience.
One of the project's standout features is the use of water effect gobo lighting. Introducing movement and visual texture into the environment, the effect provides a reference to the museum’s maritime theme and adds a more theatrical element to the lighting scheme.
A colour changing RGBW wall washing system is also used within the museum’s distinctive dome or sphere. The ability to change colour allows the character of this architectural feature to be transformed through different colours and scenes.
These effects sit alongside the architectural and exhibition lighting, creating a combination of subtle illumination and more dramatic visual elements. The ability to control and balance the different lighting components is important in ensuring that each contributes to the overall environment without competing for attention.
Lighting control with room to adapt
For a museum of this scale and complexity, the lighting control system needed to accommodate a variety of requirements while providing scope for future development.
Rako was selected for its flexibility, scalability and straightforward system maintenance. Its modular approach to lighting control provided a platform capable of accommodating the different requirements throughout the museum, from the individual lighting zones to the more dynamic lighting effects.
This was particularly important during commissioning, when the lighting team needed to coordinate fixtures, dimming channels and control zones to achieve the intended results. The ability to adjust lighting levels and scenes provided the flexibility to refine the scheme and balance the functional and theatrical elements.
Future adaptability was also an important consideration. Museum displays and visitor experiences can change over time, making a control system that can accommodate additional requirements a valuable part of the project's infrastructure.
Rako's wireless capabilities provide options for future expansion, allowing additional areas or points of control to be incorporated with less dependence on additional control wiring. This offers further flexibility should the museum's requirements develop.
A collaborative approach from concept to completion
Rako's involvement began during the early conceptual stages of the project, with the team providing technical support to KNOX Corporation as the lighting and control requirements developed.
KNOX describes Rako as a trusted supplier and partner, highlighting the support provided throughout the project and the importance of having the team involved from the outset.
As part of this collaboration, the Rako team visited Museo del Galeón alongside KNOX to see the environment first hand and better understand the practical challenges involved in illuminating such an unusual space.
With the full scale Galeón Espíritu Santo forming the centrepiece of the museum, the visit provided an opportunity to appreciate the physical scale and complexity of the installation. As KNOX explains:
“The team visited the museum alongside us to understand the physical and practical complexities of lighting this incredible vessel, taking the time to fully appreciate the scale and significance of the task at hand.”
This first hand understanding helped inform the technical support provided throughout the project, with Rako working alongside the team through the coordination and scene setting stages to help translate the intended lighting effects into the completed installation.
Light that transforms the experience
The completed lighting control solution gives Museo del Galeón the ability to manage its varied exhibition environments, bringing together precise architectural illumination and more theatrical lighting effects.
From the controlled presentation of artefacts and architectural details to the water effect gobos and colour changing RGBW lighting, the system provides the flexibility to establish different lighting environments throughout the museum.
For KNOX Corporation and the museum team, Rako provides a scalable control platform capable of accommodating the different requirements of the project while allowing scope for future development.
For visitors, the technology remains largely unseen. Instead, light becomes part of the storytelling, directing attention, establishing atmosphere and helping reveal the details that make up the museum experience.
The result is an immersive environment where lighting works alongside the architecture, exhibits and multimedia elements to help bring the Philippines’ extraordinary maritime history to life.
